NicoDou? NND?

The other day, TokyoMango posted an entry talking about RuPaul doing the same thing 兄貴 did (or was done to him… er… ><; BTW, NSFW). This isn’t about that, since I’m not an 兄貴 fan, but rather about Lisa’s use of the abbreviation NND to mean ニコニコ動画 (NicoNicoDouga).
People who read my site will know I prefer to use the actual Japanese, and when I abbreviate the name of the site, I say ニコ動 (NicoDou). And if I have to say it in English, I would probably say NicoDou.
What do you guys think? Is NND the proper English abbreviation for it? I mean, they can both exist side by side, as I call Dance Dance Revolution “DDR” in English and 「ダンレボ」 (“danrebo“) in Japanese. But, for some reason, NND doesn’t look right to me. I’m sure there are forums out there that have been posting videos from ニコ動 forever, and they should have the authority, IMHO. What do they call it?

Keep going until you cry Anki!
Written by Jeshii on 2008.10.11 – 21:09 -Some people ask me, “Jeshii, how do I learn Japanese?” I then hold back the urge to scream, “MOVE TO JAPAN!!!” and give them the following advice:
1. Download firefox and rikai-chan. Use firefox to visit Japanese pages that interest you.
2. Download Anki. It’s a fantastic flashcard program that will automatically add ふりがな.
3. Everytime you use Rikai-chan to look up a word you don’t know, hit “c” on the keyboard. This copies it to the clipboard.
4. Go in to Anki and paste it in a card.
Voilà, you are now building an extremely relevant flashcard library!

Today is the JLPT Deadline

You have until 5pm today (PDT) to register for the JLPT if you live in the United States! If you live elsewhere, please check the international site for your deadline (may have passed already ><;).
I’m taking 1級 (ikkyu) in LA. The test is on Sunday, Dec. 7th! If you are interested in studying, leave a comment! XD

Rikai-chan

Are you using rikai-chan? This excellent firefox extension is made by the folk(s) over at polarcloud.com. I love this program. Basically, you install it, install a dictionary, and then toggle it in firefox. Then, when you mouse over some Japanese, the dictionary will do its best to find the reading and a translation of the word you are mousing over.
Seriously, this program is a life saver for 漢字 (kanji) impaired people like myself. Give it a shot and then go try and read the perfume blog!

JLPT Registration

It’s that time again! Time to register for the 2008 日本語能力試験 (nihongo nouryoku shiken), aka the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Registration is until September 26 at 5:00 PM (PDT) in the US (And you can register online!). One month left! If you are taking it elsewhere, check out the official site for more info.
I have registered to take level 1 again. I have level 2 already, but level 1 defeated me last year. So, I try again. Maybe if I pass, I can beat out the coming changes that are going to make level 1 even harder.
Also, if you are in the greater Los Angeles area and want to study for 1級 or 2級, gimme a holler in the comments!
