Hammer Day: July 2009
Written by Jeshii on 2009.07.15 – 22:33 -Hammer Day came and went this month, on the 11th for those who don’t already know. This month was a little different than months previous… less emphasis on who will take up the torch since it seems enough people are participating now. I did miss it, but since today seems to be 兄貴 (aniki)’s birthday or something, there isn’t much on NicoDou that I want to see right now, so I’m playing catch up!

First place goes to 終わらないハンマー・タイム (“Owaranai Hammer Time”), which is an original 初音ミク song. It’s touching, funny, and surreal… 謎の感動 for sure.

ハンマーの人二代目 came in 3rd on the ranking this month, but did indeed return.

The Day of the Hammer Cometh
Written by Jeshii on 2009.06.11 – 23:45 -Welcome to June 11th everyone. It has already been one month since the last ハンマーの日 (hammaa no hi). Last time, １代目 (ichidaime) said it was his last hammer video. At the same time, ２代目 showed up with ham-maaaarch・∀・. But still, would ハンマーの日 come again?
I’m happy to report, ハンマーの日 came without any problems. Yes, １代目 seems to be gone, but the hammer lives on.
２代目’s new work is a Hammer version of the 初音ミク (Hatsune Miku) song ぽっぴっぽー. It really reflects ２代目’s colorful sensibilities.
Hoho, what’s this? ハンマーの日 has some other videos?!
Yes, another hammer version of ぽっぴっぽー, uploaded a mere 8 minutes later. We have concluded that this must be ２代目’s 嫁 (yome) since there is no other way they could have known. Thus, we also have the wedding ceremony below:

Yes, 3代目 of the conservative school of hammerism came up with this double punch. It is a 東方 (touhou) based work based on 恋色マスタースパーク. The first one recalls the early days of hammeristic design, and the second brings us back to the present. I fine show indeed.

【ニコニコ動画】七色のニコニコ動画
It’s here. After a slew of imitators, the true successor to the ニコニコ流星群 is here. Yes, my friends, right now, NicoDou is celebrating the release of the next megamix. 七色のニコニコ動画 (Nanairo no NicoNicoDouga) is here.
This is my first real megamix since getting into NicoDou hardcore. I love the 流星群, since that gave me the jump start I needed to get into in the first place, but this one… It is like a summary of my last year of NicoLife. I’ve featured a number of these songs on the blog over the last year, although not all of them! Can you believe that this blog will be one whole year old in just over 2 months?! WTF.
I have a list of the songs after the jump, minus the HEROES section (the section of chaos from 9:40 to 11:10) since really you could just go to the 流星群 for those songs. If you are a experienced ニコ厨 (NicoChuu), listen to it before you check the list below. See how many you recognize! If you are new to NicoDou, this is a great way to catch up! XD
(BTW, as for the English name, I would call it Rainbow Colored NicoNicoDouga if I were in charge, but a few places seem to already be translating it as “7 Colors of Nico Nico Douga.” I hate translation. 日本語バンザイ！ Oh, and as always, if you don’t have a NicoDou account, why not?!)

Telepathy, Telepathy

I guess it could also be seen as scary, depending on if you can be scared by cute little black and white cartoons. The story of the girls who suddenly get telepathic and find out that they are all dating the same guy is flipping awesome. If you understand Japanese, please watch the NicoNicoDouga version. Embedded here is the YouTube version with awesomely awkward subtitles. I wouldn’t have translated it this way, but at the same time, there is art in this translation.

Nico Year In Review: 2008

My ニコニコ動画 (NicoNicoDouga) Year in Review is solidly about the videos. Though I really didn’t start watching ニコ動 (NicoDou) until this year and 2007 also had some fantastic videos, I’m sticking to 2008 videos only! So, without further ado, here are my favorite top 13 nicovideos of the year! 13?! Yeah, I just couldn’t get it down to 10! XD

【ニコニコ動画】【手書き】初音ミクの消失-DEAD END-【PV】
This 初音ミク song was one of my personal favorites. It’s so sad, but just so well done.
The ゆっくり (Yukkuri) boom seems to have peaked and passed, but 2008 was fairly dominated by ゆっくり videos. Check out how many there are.

ゲッダン came up late in the game, but I have to say, I still can’t believe it. And I love it.

【ニコニコ動画】初音ミク が オリジナル曲を歌ってくれたよ「ワールドイズマイン」
ワールドイズマイン was almost the best 初音ミク song of the year, if not for メルト kicking ass and taking names all over the world. Some of the ワールドイズマイン original drawing versions are pretty amazing, but that’s probably just cause the song is so good.

This version of さんぽ (Sampo) from となりのトトロ (Tonari no Totoro) has so many Ghibli characters and crazy instruments, you can’t help but just feel warm and fuzzy while watching it.

メルト and ティッシュ姫 really rocked the charts this year. It is only fitting to have the fusion of the two. メルト technically came along in Dec. of 2007… Actually, so did ティッシュ姫. But, since they both had their heyday in 2008, I’ll forgive ‘em.

When I saw this scene in the theaters, I remember hyperventilating over how amazing it was. So when they added the 松岡修造 voice overs, I almost died. Good show!

チルノのパーフェクトさんすう教室 (Chiruno no Paafekuto Sansuu Kyoushitsu) was the star of IOSYS for 2008. The remixes are fantastic and so is the original. Good job guys!
Various ナイト・オブ・ナイツ remixes ruled the end of this year. This is my favorite by far.
This cat. Brilliant to teach their cat to do that. When it gets stuck in the box, I died. I am but a ghost now. Heard the previous one of the series was pretty big on YouTube as well. (Series?!)

This video is fantastic for a lot of reasons. Now that I’m more into the 東方 Project, this makes way more sense than the first time I saw it on BoingBoing. This is definitely the world’s favorite nicovideo.

This song singlehandedly changed my life. It made me go to ニコ動 to listen to it. I got the “logic” for the end of Yamatologic from it. I still believe this is the pinnacle of human evolution. So, there is no question that it is the top of my 2008 list.
Happy New Year everyone! I can’t wait to see what 2009 has to bring!

Written by Jeshii on 2008.12.24 – 16:12 -メリクリ(merikuri)！ Christmas is basically just a couple’s holiday in Japan. And so, it seems like the people who use ニコニコ動画 (NicoNicoDouga) get kind of lonely and bitter around Christmas. The result? Lots of sarcastic Christmas songs!
雌豚 (Mebuta) brings us this rendition of 宇多田ヒカル’s First Love. This one changes the lyrics to reflect the otaku mood of the season.

With all that, my favorite Christmas song is Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War Is Over). But, I just found a HI-STANDARD version that is making me quiver with cheer.

Nico Dou!! A Hatsune Miku Song

Man, sometimes being a ニコ厨 (NicoChuu) isn’t such a bad thing after all. Occasionally there are gems like this song that totally reward you proportionally to how much of a ニコニコ動画 geek you really are.
ニコどー！！(Nico Dou!!) really delivers on the ニコ動 inside jokes with mention of 悪霊退散, ｳﾏｳﾏダンス, IKZO, amongst other things.
Have a nice Nico!

Get Down!

I love the internet. I mean, one little thing will get uploaded and then it seems to just spawn off into something completely different.
This is an excellent case study. So, if you didn’t put your GoldenEye N64 cartridge in all the way and played, the characters (and any model really) would just go crazy. Think human static, limbs flailing in all directions.
Then, someone did a MAD video of it to the song “Promise” by 広瀬香美 (Hirose Koumi).
THEN, someone just did a 2ちゃん cat instead of the models.
THEN, someone made 初音ミク do it.
THEN, someone drew it with a 東方プロジェクト character.
THEN, someone danced it for REAL.
…and then someone mixed it with 吉幾三…
And this blog post fulfills the life cycle. It can now die.

The Mystery of Tissue Hime

In my never ending quest to expose all of the craziness on ニコニコ動画 (NicoNicoDouga) to the English-speaking world, I present you with the interesting character, ティッシュ姫 (“Tissue” Hime).
ティッシュ姫 is an amazing bass player (although no match for the guy from Ninja Academy!) who plays your typical ニコ動 selections, from ハルヒ stuff (hence the costume) to 初音ミク songs. ティッシュ姫 has gotten pretty big recently, from playing bass for a commercial to being in this video for メルト with slick production values.
But, even more than the music, there is one nagging question everyone asks, from ２ちゃん to Yahoo! Answers…
Is ティッシュ姫 a guy or a girl?
The official answer is 「姫」 (“Princess”) apparently. A good majority of the net is on the side of thinking it is a dude, but there is a small core of firm believers who say that ティッシュ姫 is a chick. The one side will say “look at his hands!” and the other will say “look at her thighs!”
I’m going to stay out of it, as I’m of the belief that it doesn’t matter either way. The mystery is part of the fun.
