Chinese-by-way-of-Japan Pizza
Written by Jeshii on 2005.09.25 – 01:22 -
Yay, tomorrow is Slashfood‘s Pizza Day, so today I decided to make myself a pizza. Normally, I’m all about the Hawaiian pizza, but after discussing it over with Kyun, we came up with an idea! Cantonese-style BBQ pork, bean sprout, Shanghai bok choi pizza with mabo tofu sauce! I know it is a mouthful (a tasty one at that!), but let’s look at the ingredients.

7-Eleven’s Dirty Little Secret
Written by Jeshii on 2005.09.11 – 06:46 -
7-Eleven: The world’s most ubiquitous convenience store. I mean, from growing up in LA to living in rural Japan, that ’7′ shows up even in my dreams.
Growing up, brain freeze (which is a registered trademark of 7-Eleven, ice cream headache being the more colloquial term) was a coming of age ritual. Having that pain swell up was like going into some sort of religious ecstasy.
Brain freeze is caused by Slurpees. Slurpees are an essential part of 7-Eleven. You couldn’t have one without the other, right?
Well, that’s what you think until you move to Japan, walk in to that familiar green-red-orange facade and find out that there are no Slurpees in Japan.
Yes, you heard me. There is an entire nation on the planet where the 7-Elevens do not have Slurpees. It’s mind boggling. Seeing as there are a lot of familiar things in Japan, I’d consider that my first real hit of culture shock.
Now for the kicker. A Japanese department store company (well, actually, since 7-11 has become so popular, the company is now known as 7 & i Holdings) owns a large portion of 7-Eleven. What? So, Slurpees are owned by a Japanese company, but are not available in Japan. Um… Sounds fishy to me!
In any case, there’s unsubstantiated rumors there were Slurpees at one point in the land of the rising sun. And every once in a while, I’ll meet a Japanese person who claims they have them and that I’m just not looking hard enough. So, I always hope that maybe the hundreds of stores I’ve been to in Japan are the exception and someday I’ll walk in to one and see those swirling windows of blue, orange, and cola staring back at me…
…but I’m not holding my breath.
