Christmas Cake
Written by Jeshii on 2008.12.26 – 00:10 -
Traditional Japanese Christmas Cake (and yeah, I’m using the word “traditional” is the lightest sense possible) is generally what they call a strawberry shortcake. American’s sometimes get confused that Japanese shortcake is nothing like the biscuit-like shortcake in America, it is more of a sponge cake in the usual English sense.
I went to Mousse Fantasy on Sawtelle yesterday to go get a slice of JP cake. I saw this cake in the case for $40! But, it is totally what I imagine a Japanese Christmas Cake to be like.

Hi Jeshii.
I’ve never connected “shortcake” to English.
I somehow regarded it as something like Japaninglish.
So, in English shortcake is what you mean shortbread? That’s far from sponge cake that we call “shortcake”!
There are many many confusing English words we use as Japanese. I believe that does confuse English speakers who learn Japanese.
BTW, I realized while I’m writing this, that you kindly linked my blog to your Blogroll!
Arigatou! and let me do the same for you.
Thanks for your attention, and I’ll see you around again in 2009.
よいお年をお迎えください。
来年もよろしくお願いします!(^^)/

そうそう! American strawberry shortcake is basically like strawberries and cream on a biscuit! They are both really pretty good, but if you are expecting the other one, it can be surprising.
In fact, on LA Yelp, one girl said “They don’t have shortcake, just sponge cake!” I had to correct her and say “Oh, no, they have _Japanese_ shortcake.”
But yes, it can be very confusing. But I think that’s part of the fun!
Oh, thank you for the link!
