Is perfume breaking up your marriage?
Written by Jeshii on 2008.09.10 – 19:00 -So remember I was taking about perfume, the wildly popular elecropop girls trio?
Well, looks like perfume are so popular, they are starting to break up marriages.
The story comes from
a thread on the message boards over at Yahoo!知恵袋 (Yahoo!chiebukuro). My translation of the initial post is as follows:
My wife is pressing the “perfume” question.
Hello. I’m a 29 year old married man. I don’t have any children.
It’s not like I’m really big into music, but I download and listen to a lot of different kinds of music. It doesn’t matter if it is Western or Japanese and I enjoy music from any genre.
The other day, a friend of mine recommended I give perfume a listen, but although it was music that was fairly off my particular radar, I gave them a listen and really liked it. The music videos are also quite spectacular, so I really started to get into them and started to buy DVDs on Yahoo! Auctions and collect all the CDs I could.
When I recommended them to my wife, she quietly listened and said “This is some interesting music, huh?” But then, one day, I asked her over dinner, “Who is your favorite out of the three perfume girls?” She responded angrily, 『殺すぞ』 (korosu zo, “I’ll kill you.”)
“Who gets these girly DVDs and CDs at this age?! You are always listening to it everyday! You pervert!” Among the verbal abuse, she overturned the table. Since then, my wife has started to curse the very thought of perfume. If they show up on TV, she will change the channel. If their music is the background of a commercial, she will mute it just for that commercial. She does this all with a blank face. It’s scary.
One day, when I came home from work, I found that almost all the pictures on perfume CD covers had labels put over the faces of かしゆか (Kashiyuka) and のっち (Nocchi). Somehow, あーちゃん (A~chan) made it unscathed. When I asked my wife what she was doing, she replied with the question “Which is more important, our life together or perfume?”
We aren’t very wealthy nor affluent. It seems my hobby of trying to buy CDs and DVDs had ticked her off. In the end, she hit me with these conditions. “Put all of your perfume stuff on Yahoo! Auctions, and stop listening to perfume completely. If you can’t do this, I want a divorce.”
Up until now, I had a lot of CDs of young girl bands/singers in pretty heavy rotation, and I bought some DVDs, but my wife had never said anything before… And how come あーちゃん was the only one to make it out without being covered in stickers? But I’m not in any position to be asking these questions right now. I have to get rid of the CDs and DVDs by the end of the month. This is really harsh…
To the wives and women out there, is there some way that I can peacefully end this thing? My wife is the same age as myself.
Thank you for reading.
On a side note, my real name is Yasutaka.
(Translator’s note: That last thing about Yasutaka, the DJ who produces and makes perfume’s music is Nakata Yasutaka.)
Poor guy. But, I gotta say, if is wife is that upset about it, he must be totally otaku-ing out on perfume.
But that is a good question… why perfume? And why not A~chan? Maybe it is just her cryptic way of saying which one is her favorite?!

wow. that is creepy + weird. i wonder if the wife has some kind of past experience that she doesn’t like to think about and that perfume reminds her of. and maybe a-chan reminds her of someone important to her?? MAYBE SHE KNOWS A-CHAN~~! The guy is 29; his wife must be a little younger. The perfume girls are around 20 years old. It wouldn’t be insane to think that the wife could have known these girls.

lol, I personally think the guy is downplaying how into perfume he was. And yeah, the whole A-chan thing is very weird… I still think that was her way of answering the question! XD

I like A-chan. So good move in my mind.
That guy had to be on perfume overload… sometimes I question myself when I listen but I’m like WHATEVER I’m going to enjoy this candy coated pop goodness and be happy.
I find it funny when my friend from Nagoya calls perfume a bunch of noisy, Hiroshima-ben speaking freaks.
Even funnier is that she really likes the group.

lol, for some reason i can relate with this… I think sometimes women can over react about small things like this. I know even though I’m not a big fan of this one k-pop singer but I did at one time follow her music some. Well the point is my girlfriend can over react about it and get upset if I mention that particular music. I think it is just some insecurity, jealousy and lack of trust sometimes or even something I can’t understand. I’m not the jealous type, but it seems not being jealous sometimes can look like you don’t care. All this is just more complicated than any of us can imagine.

im not sure if this is a real story , or the guy is just making this up , any way , if this was true , this is obvious that its jealousy , and this is normal when his wife see her man drooling when looking to some other girl in a perverted way , or even if she thinks some other girl is taking his attention ,even if she was far away or on tv ,
i think that the guy should talk to his wife and try to gratify her , and explain the situation to her (that this is just some interest in the music) , and he’d better not lye to her when he says that , and finally , his interest in them wont last for long , but his love to his wife should last for ever , when his wife hears that , she wont be angry any more

Mr. 2000jp, you definately are on the money about the drooling thing. I love your prose style too! Welcome! XD

Well, I’d go for a divorce if my partner couldn’t tolerate my hobbies and interests…even if they happen to be a group of three beautiful girls with cheerful music.
I love Perfume and I wouldn’t let anyone tell me not to listen to what I like, or even worse ruin my collection withstickers over the artists’ faces… o_O
Btw, I’d marry Nocchi as well to avoid this dilemma. =D

…Someone’s jealous of Perfume…like all the other peoples, his love for his wife should be stronger than any. WHAT’S SO WRONG ABOUT LIKING PERFUME? THEY’RE AWESOME! Maybe the wife wants to have her “figure” back er something like that, and wants to dance and sing like that, yeah well, you had your chance, TOO LATE WOMAN! XDD Anyways, wooooww, y’all know that he’s like, older than Perfume right? So what? Boys like Perfume too. (I’m a girl btw) Everyone should like Perfume if they’re that much of a fan about it. Haha, the old divorce threat, that’s never gonna happen to you…..unless it already did….Maybe your wife’s just bluffing. She wants you alllll to herself.

No offense, but I think his wife is crazy. Like Kathy Bates in the movie “Misery” crazy.
Reading the post, he doesn’t seem to be very obsessed about them; he just really enjoys their music. I think his wife is too “needy” and probably can’t stand him even glancing at another woman.
She suxs! Perfume rules!

hmm,, this guy didn’t tell us much about himself –he told us only what his wife had done,,
if he really is so ‘otaku’ about perfume, it would obvious that his wife got angry and jealous,,
,,
but, of course, i’ll also take のっち,,

what a horrible woman! and so many nocchi fans! personally, i’d go for kashiyuka.

His wife does not know A-chan, she just knows she will not LOSE to A-chan, but Kashiyuka and Nocchi are two she feels threatened by. It’s not all that rare for a wife to say “I’ll kill you”, but it’s scary the first time you hear it. Most married men have heard this, unfortunately. If not then she said it very quietly! (joke)

Maybe he’s married to that one girl who was in Perfume before Nocchi? XD
-Mana.

Wow, that would make way too much sense! XD

yasutaka-san, so what happened in the end? you sold all your perfume stuff out and your wife was appeased?

The wife sounds creepy…I’d say any spouse, whether male or female, who can’t tolerate their partner’s eccentric hobbies shouldn’t even be in a marriage at all.
My wife and I are big Perfume fans, and we are in a country (The Philippines) where most music playing on TV and radio are terrible repetitive ‘novelty’ crap with sexual double-entendre lyrics. Perfume helps keep us sane and prevents us from having earworm LSS. We both like Nocchi.

@canfried:
Yeah, that’s always my excuse for Perfume… the music is excellent. I love their producer/DJ. If you want more music like it, check out Capsule for sure.
